UCONN COLLEGIUM MUSICUM CONCERT

The University of Connecticut Collegium Musicum presents “A Cup of Joe.” Directed by Dr. Eric Rice, Collegium will be featuring multiple works from George Frideric Handel’s “Joseph and his Brethen”. They will also be featuring polyphony by Orlande de Lassus.

The University of Connecticut Collegium Musicum consists of approximately 24 highly select singers and 15 instrumentalists and selection to this ensemble is by audition through the Choral Placement Hearing process. Its purpose is to promote an understanding of the music of the late Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque period with regard to style, performance practices, and cultural milieu, through rehearsal and performance of at least two concerts each semester. The ensemble often performs off-campus and presents clinics and outreach concerts with local schools.

During J.S. Bach’s lifetime (1685–1750), a collegium musicum was a group of amateur musicians, primarily university students, who met to rehearse and perform for pleasure. The term is commonly used today to refer to ensembles of instrumentalists and singers that perform early music.
